MAO was established out of the desire to work differently and to focus on the projects we are passionate about. We are a CIAT registered practice that provides a high-quality service and delivers professional expertise. We draw on the experience of a wide range of projects to develop innovative and creative solutions to meet the individual needs of each project. We are known for our creativity and distinctive quality of work, and we strive for challenging design opportunities, with the hope to produce high-quality designs that will positively affect lives. We don’t just want to be another architectural studio, we want to be to “go to” place, where ideas are brought to reality.
We take an open and collaborative approach to design work, involving our clients at all stages. We identify key stakeholder groups and test the design brief through workshops and community engagement events. By involving all key stakeholders in the design process enhances buy-in and community support for your project.
Our designs are not guided by a single architectural style, but instead we aim for simplicity and high quality to achieve “beautiful ordinary” designs. This is achieved through carefully considered details and material selection. Each building is tailor-made as a strong representation of the client’s aspirations.
The more complex a design challenge, the more it benefits from multiple voices and philosophies. We work in partnership with other professionals, leveraging the combined creative skill set of and the enormous experience across our team and partners to deliver designs that surpass client’s expectations.
At Mao, we take tremendous pride in our unique style; Our core area of expertise is historic and listed building. We also design educational structures such as schools, and universities.

Is my project too small?
We work on a diverse range of project sizes – from porches and bus shelters, to country estates and community centres and no project is too small to benefit from our Architectural input. However, we only take on projects where we can add value. If we think we are not right for your project, we will discuss this with you and offer you some alternative suggestions.
